When to Book a Maternity Photoshoot: The Ideal Week

Every maternity portrait is a photograph of a moment that will never repeat. Unlike a wedding, where the date is fixed and the planning follows, a maternity session must find its moment inside a window that nature sets, and that window is narrower than most expectant mothers realise.

The portrait window: weeks 27 to 34
Most fine art maternity portraits are composed between the 27th and the 34th week of pregnancy. There is a simple aesthetic logic behind this range.
Before week 27, the silhouette is often not yet defined enough to carry the composition. The curve that the entire portrait is built around is still emerging. After week 34, comfort becomes the limiting factor: sessions involve standing poses, gentle movement, and gown changes, and the final weeks deserve to be spent resting, not performing.
Within that window, weeks 30 to 32 tend to be the sweet spot: the belly fully sculptural, energy still good, and enough margin remaining in case the session needs to move for weather, health, or life.
Every pregnancy is its own case. Expecting twins usually shifts the window two to four weeks earlier. A first pregnancy often shows later than a second or third. This is why, in a private commission, the exact date is chosen together during the consultation, with the weeks of pregnancy, not the due date, as the reference.
When to enquire: earlier than you think
Here is the part that surprises people. If the portrait happens around week 30, the enquiry should happen around week 16 to 20, early in the second trimester.
The reason is not artificial scarcity. A private session involves a consultation, gown selection and fitting, styling coordination, and, for our London commissions, the reservation of a private photography studio in Chelsea. Each of these steps takes calendar time. And because a studio that works by private commission accepts a limited number of sessions per season, the dates inside your ideal window may simply be taken if the conversation starts at week 26.
A useful rule: enquire as soon as the second trimester begins. The consultation itself takes less than an hour, and from that point everything is held for you.
Private maternity commissions are received by application at our Milan studio and, each season, in London. To begin, enquire through the contact page.
